Because the college exists to recognize and encourage academic excellence, it also welcomes applications for admission from sophomores who were not in the HC in their first year, but were among the top performers as first year students at UVM. Sophomore admission requires an application form, a 3.40 grade point average at the end of the first year, a letter of recommendation from a UVM faculty member, and a brief essay. Over 100 sophomores are admitted annually.

UVM welcomes applications from talented students. Through a holistic admissions review, we select students with strong potential for academic success who will contribute to our community. The rigor of an applicant’s academic program; class standing and grades; standardized test results; and trends in performance are considered. Essays, recommendations, and other evidence of each student’s life experience also assist our evaluation. Admission decisions are made without regard to family financial circumstances.

The Statement of Purpose is a very important part of your application. In fact, at UVM it is given the same weight as your academic transcript, graduate record exam (GRE) scores, and letters of recommendation. Furthermore, the Statement of Purpose demonstrates how well you express yourself using the written word. An effective Statement of Purpose is a 1 – 2 page essay that typically:
