When Steve Hind and Alula Eshete were putting together the annual admission and essay guides to Harvard Business School, what struck them most about the essays that helped to get current and future classmates admitted was how different they were from each other. However well meaning the Harvard team’s recommendations — who doesn’t want a kinder, gentler, fairer admissions process? — they will do little to level the playing field. Encouraging high school kids to make “more meaningful contributions to others” will just provide new ways to game the system.
