Required Documents for the Undergraduate Application
The documents below are required.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Completed School of Journalism online application form for current USC students only.
- Statement of Intent: A one-page essay focusing on your interest in pursuing an education and career in the field of journalism. Limit 500-600 words.
- References: Applicants will be required to list two references. References should be academic or professional.
NOTE: The Admission Committee will review students’ academic records (transcripts and transfer credit statements) on the university system.

Journalism requires applicants to write a personal essay. The essay is an extremely important part of the application, so treat it accordingly. The essay should be 1,000 to 1,500 words in length. In addition, all applicants must submit at least three samples of their work, whether published or not.

Second semester sophomores are invited to apply for the Journalism Minor by submitting an to Program Director Barbara Feinman Todd by March 16, 2017. Selection will be based on overall academic performance and strength of the application essay. A demonstrated interest in journalism, such as prior newsroom experience through internships and/or campus news media participation, will also be strongly considered. Hard copies should be submitted to the director's office (342 NN) or in her mailbox in the main English Department office (306 NN).
