2017-2018 Common Application Essay Prompts

Change is in the air. For those of you high schoolers who will be filling out your Common Application this fall, get ready to encounter the new essay prompts. There’s good news and bad news, in my view. The good news is that the new prompts (I’ll list them shortly) will likely give you a better opportunity to “market” both yourself and your writing talents. That’s not to say that the old prompts could not have been advantageous for a decent writer.

The Common Application is changing up its essay prompts for the 2017–2018 college admission cycle. That means current high school juniors will see the new(-ish) prompts when they apply for college in the fall of 2017. But what do these changes mean for you?

Essays, perhaps next to the SAT, may be the most feared and stressed-over component of college applications. We’ve discussed the finer points of essay writing many times here. Before you start working on your Common Application essay and the associated Common Application supplements that colleges just love to throw your way, you need to start seeing yourself in the proper perspective in regards to being an applicant to your candidate colleges. This stratagem applies even if you’re not aiming for the top, as with the Ivies and other elites. Knowing who you are and how you think, plus being able to express that in an articulate statement, will go a long way in advancing your admission chances, regardless of where you are applying.
