Applying to college can be stressful for both students and parents. I help facilitate this process by meeting with students, getting to know them, and helping them to reflect upon their backgrounds and accomplishments and clearly articulate their interests and goals. Together we then brainstorm meaningful, personal topics for their main Common Application essay and school-specific supplemental essays.

While most components of college applications are very straightforward, many people view the essay portion as a wild card – the space in which your child may make or break his or her chances of getting into the ideal college. It’s no surprise, then, that so many college applicants and parents worry that the admissions essay will fail to shed a remarkable light on his or her abilities. To add even more stress, getting accepted into ideal colleges has become increasingly competitive. Students faced with many applications often do not know where to begin, how to organize their time and what to write about. Many students wait until the last minute to complete their essays and, as a result, submit subpar material.

The good news is: I have some words of wisdom to help make sure your essays are "totally baller" or whatever the kids are saying these days. As a college application consultant I have seen the good, the bad and the just plain ugly of these college essays while helping students reach for the Ivy League, and I've come up with some helpful tips to keep the admissions committee from lighting your application on fire and laughing maniacally.
