Feb 5, 2013 - What do you think of the Common App's new essay prompts

For 2013, the Common Application, which is accepted by a fairly high percentage of colleges and universities, is being modified as to what you can write your major essay about. The most significant and controversial revision is that you may no longer write about a “topic of your choice”. You must now write your essay in response to one of the following 5 specific prompts:

The people behind The Common Application have just released the (PDF link) for college applicants who apply in the 2013-2014 admissions season. As noted in The Common Application Board of Directors’ announcement, these new prompts are the result of two years of discussion about where essays fit in the overall college admissions process. This is the first big change to the essays in years (including to the word counts!), and it’s clear that the Common Application Board didn’t take the task of reworking these essays lightly.

Every year colleges and universities ask applicants to write essays to explain who they are and to show how they think and write (assuming that the students actually write the essays themselves). Even many of the hundreds of schools that accept the online Common Application still require supplemental writing samples. Most of the essay prompts are predictable — but not all. Here are some of the more unusual ones for the 2013-14 college application season.
